ARTIST FUND

Indie Artist Fund by Srijit Bhowmick.png

SUPPORT SRIJIT BHOWMICK'S MUSIC.
SUPPORT THE CREATOR.

When you choose a subscription plan, you choose to support Srijit Bhowmick's independent music career and help it grow. Good art thrives on patronage and his music is at the center of this model. 100% of the revenue (from the patrons through per song subscriptions) goes towards covering the production costs of his independent singer-songwriter original music. You get 100% back via unique products.

An independent artist/creator may write songs out of thin air (and even cover art concepts, music video scripts, etc). But for it to reach you, a lot more happens. Through this revenue, Srijit Bhowmick will be able to partially cover production-related costs of his original music. It involves the following expenses (listed on the basis of priority):

  • studio (recording, mixing, mastering) / sound engineer expenses

  • fees of session musicians / co-producer

  • music artworks (cover art of songs involving photos/designs/illustrations)

  • music distribution & licensing, jam-room rehearsal expenses

  • audio-video content (indie music videos, for example) and/or other marketing assets

  • tours to push the music out there, create a momentum and secondary content

WHO IS A PATRON

A patron of the arts, is someone who regularly supports artists, musicians, writers and others. Some of the greatest artists in history could do what they did because they had patrons. Like Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Tansen, Swami Haridas (Tansen's guru), Satyajit Ray, Rabindranath Tagore, to the new-age filmmakers, musicians, artists and writers. Meanwhile, independent news portals like The Wire, Scroll, Quint, Alt-news or YouTube/social media journos or content-makers (e.g., Samdish Bhatia, etc) and others (in India and everywhere).. to even tarot cart readers, spiritual gurus, mumbo-jumbo experts, astrologers or others (the list is of all kinds and endless) have patrons.

WHAT YOUR PATRONAGE CAN DO

Art has always been defined as an intangible social good. It is so because the artist has to be mad enough to let go of assured returns and an assured dignified life via other occupations, to bring into the world some good art and seek fans/contributors to be able to continue doing so (even doing that gets stressful primarily due to the huge costs involved). In Srijit Bhowmick's case, the goal is not just to work hard and grow it but to also try and turn his unadulterated original artistry into an artistically uncompromising but sustainable business over time. It involves consistent releases and/or release cycles (if it's singles, then the probable goal is one single every quarter), to attain the targeted growth so that an inflexion point is reached with respect to costs and ROI. It involves not just putting the music out but also pushing it out there via the bare minimum music-related activities that allows for or accumulates conversions, reach and metrics over time given that merely releasing a song doesn't do any of this.

WHAT YOUR PATRONAGE CAN SUPPORT

This cap and value could be modified in the future as we grow and gain more patrons.

A. YOUR PURCHASES, FEEDS HIS GOALS.

To begin with, Srijit Bhowmick has set a target of INR 20,000 per month. Let's say, he has 40 patrons contributing INR 500 per month. If these payments are recurring for 12 months, he can partially cover the audio-visual production expenses of 4 singles/songs. If they are recurring for 3 months, then that of 1 single/song.

It involves the following costs partially covered for every single (listed on the basis of priority):

  • studio (recording, mixing, mastering) / sound engineer expenses

  • fees of session musicians / co-producer

  • music artworks (cover art of songs involving photos/designs/illustrations)

  • music distribution & licensing, jam-room rehearsal expenses

  • an indie self-produced music video

OVERHEADS: It is still loss-making due to many other overheads. Such as, intra-city travel-expenses per single (30 days), concessions on real rates (throughout the supply line) in terms of their monthly/daily/hourly income as session musicians, sound engineers, music educators, producers and all the opportunities they are skipping, to work with Srijit Bhowmick because of their love for his/good original music. It also doesn't cover the rent, bills, personal expenses, payments and/or the taxes of Srijit Bhowmick which are taken care of through other business engagements and means outside of his independent original singer-songwriter music. This revenue just about allows Srijit Bhowmick to, at the bare minimum, pay them their discounted/concessional fees, get them onboard and put the product (his music and maybe, some related content/activities) out.

MULTIPLE ROLES:

It also involves Srijit Bhowmick working on multiple roles & responsibilities, for music production and all other music-related activities, as usual. At this stage, doing all that helps to cut down the losses and squeeze more out of the limited funds for growth. Like for Lifafon Mein's music video (out now), Srijit Bhowmick is the producer, scriptwriter, actor, director, did the storyboarding, did the editing to an extent, gotten friends/acquaintances onboard to act and done pretty much everything by himself while hiring a videographer to help shoot & edit (esp, color grading). Other than singing the songs he writes (composes the tune, writes the lyrics, builds a rhythm), he plays the guitars, arranges and produces his music, is an art director for all his photoshoots with the concepts (including sketches shared with the illustrator for Gulaam and Tum Aayi Ho or for The Only Find/Lifafon Mein's photoshoot), does the PR, built this website, book gigs, tours, everything. With subscription plans, it'll involve even more roles and responsibilities such as maintaining records, communication with contributors (mails, texts, calls) and much more.

B. ASSURED CONVERSIONS AND GROWTH, IF WE AIM RIGHT.

With a target amount of INR 40,000 per month raised from subscription payments, let us assume that 80 patrons are contributing 500 INR a month. If the payments are recurring for 12 months, Srijit Bhowmick can partially cover the production expenses of four singles/songs, as stated above (at the top) and additionally, may also deliver:

  • 4 indie self-produced music videos but better quality

  • more audio-visual content and other marketing assets such as putting together one or more 3-6 city tours to push the music out there

  • ads

This helps him to push his music out there. Thus, allowing him to get actual conversions (metrics, bookings and other inquiries and more payments for his goods, experiences and services, so on) via recurring live shows, content, ads, marketing and other activities. This, in turn, pushes the demand and allows him to stay in the news, ride the wave/carry the momentum, keep churning out new music and new audio-visual content that engages and excites the older fans while enticing and attracting the newer/yet-to-be fans. It leads to that pivotal ripple effect on an upward spiral creating recurring growth. It still continues to be loss-making but there's that growth which music companies such as labels and management aspire for or actualize, that allows for profits and self-sustainability in 1-3 years (without necessarily the varied experiences of Srijit Bhowmick and/or with a much higher burn rate of investments).

Most of the MULTIPLE ROLES & all of the OVERHEADS, mentioned under A, still apply.

HOW ONE CAN SUPPORT

Communications:

Please ensure you share your - name, email id and phone number - every time you make a contribution or payment via the link "BECOME A PATRON" or if directly, via mails or DMs. It helps us to keep a record, communicate either way and deliver the non-premium or premium subscription plan that you're guaranteed (even if, curated specifically for you).

Patronage Types/Duration:

There are individual subscription and business plans for you. For individual subscription plans, pay or contribute once or as many times or as much as you like but either way, all-in-all, you're in control of ascribing to Srijit Bhowmick's music and/or it's related content/activities, a value you believe it deserves. It can also be an institutional grant or the likes. We'd prefer per song
contributions (via plans), as it helps us to forecast and plan our operations/productions in advance. Patronage is generally regular and recurring but in our case, our subscription-based model makes things easier for you and we get to give back more to you than the official releases.

Payment Methods:

Srijit Bhowmick has tied up as a merchant with one of India's topmost third-party payment gateway service providers. Click on 'BECOME A PATRON' at the top of the page after you choose a plan. The payment gateway currently charges us a small fee depending on the payment method (for example, if you pay INR 3000 via UPI, we're charged INR 66, today, by the third-party payment gateway) but you can also get in touch directly with us (mails/DMs) and use UPI/Bank Transfers if you're from/in India (go to Contact and use the info provided). It always helps to cut through several bottlenecks & entry barriers for creators in this geography (no 80g exceptions for creator funds) and maximize the use of your contributions/payments.

We'd suggest you to pay at least 6.5-7% more to bring it line with UPI transactions (as is, in the case of using the payment gateway for payments from India/Indian accounts).

For direct bank/UPI payments, add our contact number and find us on Gpay/PayTm or DM.

Proof of your support:
Every electronic transaction creates a digital record every-time there's a transaction on both ends, so, the proof of purchase/contribution is taken care of on both ends. We wouldn't encourage offline transactions for the same reason.

COMPLETE TRANSPARENCY

Here’s the coolest part! Each and every paisa going in and out of this fund will be accounted for and the balance sheet will be updated every quarter/a few weeks before a release and shared with our patrons. We hope that this will go a long way in furthering the Indian music industry and fill the potholes that are glaring at us, especially the creators, now more than ever.
